Part 4

On the site of the old Prince's palace of Moldavia's voivods stands today the Palace of Culture. It houses other cultural institutions, such as the Museum of Ethnography, the Art Gallery, the Museum of Moldavia's History, all of which collect valuable treasures of Romanian civilization and culture.

The Museum of Natural History, an old scientific institution, the Museum of the Union and the Museum of Literature also contribute to the image of Iasi as a city of culture.

Around the institutions of higher education and the Branch of the Romanian Academy, strong scientific centres have developed which, through the practical goals of their researches dedicate their efforts to economic, social and moral progress. The "Vasile Alecsandri" National Theater, the State Opera and the "George Enescu" Philharmonic Orchestra maintain a lively artistic movement. The "Junimea" publishing house, the literary periodicals "Convorbiri literare" and "Cronica" give a creative impetus to literature.

Through its historical and cultural destiny, Iasi gives an illustrative example of continuity, of tradition opened to innovations. Its centuries old existence sets in a new light an old truth: the culture of a people, as well as its social life, belong to an order of duration, of content. Long lasting links connect the limited senses of historical periods, and the endless movement towards social and moral progress is achieved under the progressive and human spirit of the men who served in the noble cause of their country.
